Brief History

The Bedford Arms is probably Linslade's oldest pub. Its licence dates back to the 1800's when it was known as the Corbet Arms, after the family that had been Lords of the Manor of Linslade since the 15th century.

Folklore

Reported historical accounts of Haunting in the House

The haunting is reputed to be that of a lady who leans over visiting guests in room 3, she has been seen by many locals and is described as wearing a long grey dress with a white pinafore and has brown hair worn in a tight bun.

Details of Investigation by Cambridge Paranormal Society and Ghost UK

The C.P.S was invited along to join up with Ghost UK for the night on this investigation. The investigations where co-ordinated by Heidi Graham. The investigation started at 12.15am when the pub had been cleared. No one in the team with the exception of Heidi or Mike had any knowledge of the activity that was meant to take place in the pub. It was decided to keep it that way until the morning when we would debrief. Heidi the medium of the group took every one around the upstairs rooms one by one to make a note of any feelings that they had on entering the rooms. The rooms concerned for the night's investigations were room 2,3,4 and the airing cupboard.

Room 2

(Ghost UK Details)

At the beginning of the night Alan and Mike went upstairs to this room and placed a video camera and EVP test which were left running. They also place the sugar cubes surrounded by a small amount of flour on all the unit tops. At 12.55am Heidi and Alan went to check on the equipment. The video had ran out of tape, the recorder for EVP hadn't even taped anything yet Alan swears he left it recording, after listening to it we could hear a woman's voice on it and someone walking around in the room even though it was empty. The flour around the dresser sugar cubes looked like it had been swept across the top, it looked like one fingerprint had been left but obviously we cant prove it wasn't one of ours. No other tests had moved.

(C.P.S Details)

Angela felt that this room had a strange feeling to it and that during the night while a small group where conducting some automatic writing experiment in the room , she and Kathy thought they heard someone shouting from within the building. No one else where in the building had heard any noise. Martin felt every time on entering this room a feeling of shortness of breath and feeling of suffocation.

Room 3

(Ghost UK Details)

There is supposed to be something that happens between 2am and 3am in this particular room, so we set up the camera and EVP test to see what we could catch. The video picked up a few orbs but the best thing was we could hear a woman's dress swishing along the carpet. The video also went in and out of focus quite a few times, although it was sometimes because of the car headlights shining through the window. The crucifix and sugar cubes never moved. The EVP in this room picked up a lot of interference, so we can't distinguish anything as yet. We all tried to do psychic writing in here but no one was successful.

(C.P.S Details)

Angela felt that this room gave her a feeling of anxiety and a spine tingling sensation. Martin had the visual impression of a small child had once been in this room.

Room 4

(Ghost UK Details)

At 4.50am we had Martin, Simon, Kathy, Elaine and Angela go into this room with a video camera as something is supposed to make people feel bad breathing problems at this time. Kathy was the only one, who picked up on feeling suffocated and tight chest, yet no one had told her the story.

(C.P.S Details)

Nothing was noticed by any C.P.S members at this time

Airing Cupboard

When opening the door to this small room, some people felt they should have carried on walking into another room or down a staircase; some even had bad feelings when opening this door. Some of the Staff doesn't like going opening the airing cupboard. It was noticed that there is a loft hatch in the cupboard

Bar Area

Heidi, Wendy, Alan and martin heard a loud bang coming from behind the bar, on investigating nothing could be found to explain it, all there was, was a cold spot although the temperature gauges gave no indication of any significant temp fluctuations. As an experiment the medium Heidi conducted a sance and table rapping in here and apart from the odd tap or bang nothing much else happened Martin had the mental impressions of American Airmen WWII having once been associated with the bar area. Orbs where picked up on Digital Cameras. SLR photo still to be confirmed.

Debriefing

At the end of the investigation every one was told the history of the reputed haunting of the Bedford Arms and the experiences of the landlady. Interestingly at least four of the group had sensed events in room 2 and 3 that would coincide with reports of the landlady and the Haunting. Everyone with out exception reported that the far end of the bar was the area that they all should be looking as they sensed that if anything was going to show up this would be where it would happen. Mike discovered that this Area of the Bar was at one time a temporary morgue.

Conclusions of investigation

Please note that this was an investigation co-ordinated by Ghost UK and as such any EVP or Video evidence is in their possession Although it was disappointing that no one had any first hand experience of any paranormal activity, as everyone had felt early in the evening that the pub had a lot of potential for a sighting that night, We did enjoy working with the Ghost UK team and look forward to working with them again in the future.
